Black and white US people demonstrate during the "March on Washington for jobs and freedom" on August 28, 1963 on Constitution Avenue in Washington DC, demanding "equal rights now", "effective civil rights laws now", "full citizenship". During the march of August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King, standing in front of the Lincoln Memorial, delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech in which he called for an end to racism, and which mobilized supporters of desegregation and prompted the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
